Nightstand
Year: Summer 2023

I was inspired to create this piece because I needed furniture for my bedroom before moving into a college house after my freshman year. While cleaning out my parents garage while I was on summer break, I found a lot of plywood and decided to build this nightstand. This is the first piece of furniture I have ever built, and it came with a lot of learning curves. I did not do everything perfectly, but I’m proud of myself for trying something new and glad it sparked a passion for creating custom furniture.
My process:
-
I sketched a few drafts of the structure and measurements and made a cut list
-
With my dad’s help, I learned how to use a jigsaw to cut the pieces to size
-
I used wood dowels and wood glue to assemble
-
I built the drawer and attached the drawer slides
-
I attached some trim to the outside of the drawer
-
I primed and painted the nightstand
-
I added the hardware
The biggest challenge about this project for me was learning how to be accurate with my measurements and working with whatever tools I had.
