Torch Lake Zen Center

Year: Spring 2024

Updated Rendering: Spring 2025 done in 3DS Max

Concept

Located in Torch Lake, Michigan, the goal of this project was to create a zen retreat center utilizing old and new construction.

For the zen aspect of my retreat, I wanted to focus on it being very simple yet accommodating. Though luxury can be an important aspect in taking time off to reflect and recenter, I chose a retreat focused on limiting technology, encouraging play, creativity, and adventure, and embracing solitude in nature. Here, it is simple yet comfortable, leaving much room for something we should all practice more: coming back to the basics.

For the design aspect, I wanted natural materials such as wood and stone to be the main focus of the exterior. I combined a few aspects from each top home style to create my facades. Open floor plans, exposed beams, arched doorways, and cozy window seats and nooks characterize my interiors. It comes out to around 13,500 sq ft.

During this semester, I learned Revit for the first time as well as building construction methods. I was able to apply these skills to my project and also made a set of construction documents. The following spring semester, I was able to render some of my perspectives using 3ds Max and even made a walk through animation video.

Wall Section

In my building systems class this semester, we learned about basic construction methods for residential builds. Throughout the semester, we studied the different aspects of foundations, walls, and roofs and were tasked to create an AutoCAD drawing labeling the parts. I really enjoyed getting to know the details of construction and applying them to our semester project.
